Mixtab

ROLE

Co-creator, Designer & Frontend Engineer

Timeline

2010 — 2012

Mixtab aimed to make RSS beautiful and accessible. Users could organize feeds into topic-based tabs, and a Tab Gallery let non-technical users subscribe to community-curated tabs with a single click.

I designed and built the user interface of the app, which Apple featured on the Mac App Store homepage numerous times and held the #1 spot in News for over a year.

Tabs

Challenge

Managing RSS feeds is messy, and it's hard to keep tabs on everything. Even when feeds cover the same topic, updates stay siloed, so you end up tracking sources one by one.

Approach

Represent topics as tabs that aggregate multiple RSS feeds on a single topic in one place.

Solution

  • Organize RSS feeds into tabs (collections).
  • Add a single feed by pasting a URL (auto-detect + validate).
  • Discover community feeds: search public feeds with autocomplete; one-click add.
  • Import many feeds at once via OPML.
  • Set per-tab privacy: private or public.

Outcome

Users can now enjoy reading by topic instead of managing individual feeds.

Tab Gallery

Challenge

RSS is powerful but confusing for many non-technical users.

Approach

Let users share tabs publicly and provide a gallery where anyone can discover tabs across many topics.

Solution

  • Public tabs appear in the Tab Gallery with one-click subscribe.
  • Tabs are categorized by topic.
  • The Tab Gallery is searchable with autocomplete previews.
  • Curated Featured and trending Popular categories surface interesting tabs.
  • Non-technical users can enjoy RSS without needing to understand how it works.

Outcome

Made RSS approachable and enabled community-driven discovery.

Animations

Challenge

Desktop reading apps can feel static without motion cues.

Approach

Use tasteful animations and natural gestures to make navigation delightful.

Solution

  • Animated splash/logo on app open to reduce perceived loading time.
  • Trackpad swipes for page-to-page navigation.
  • Consistent transition animations between views.
  • Optimized animation Bézier curves to balance speed, elegance, and a playful sense of discovery.

Outcome

Delivered a smooth, engaging experience that users loved and praised.
